Birthday party celebrates local survivor

The community came together on Saturday to once again celebrate Cherelle’s Smith’s birthday with her. The birthday party has become an annual event to celebrate, not just another year, but life,

Cherelle Smith was stricken with Group A Strep eight years ago, while she was pregnant with her son, Orayn’.

Cherelle Smith’s mother, Krista Smith, said that her daughter is still stable, and this summer she will be going to Raleigh to see her son.

“Cherelle is doing very well,” Krista Smith said.

The 28th birthday celebration included performances from St. Stephen’s Choir, the Meherrin Male Chorus, God’s Community Praise, Blackstone Community Choir, the Spiritual Disciples, the Mighty Southernaires, The Gospel Harmoneers, and the Gospeltones.

Krista Smith said she tries to make the party bigger every year. She plans to keep celebrating as long as she and her daughter both live.

“It will continue to go on,” she said.

Krista Smith wants to thank all the people who came out to celebrate, as well as all the people who support her daughter throughout the year, including Lake Country Transport and the healthcare workers.

This was the first time the party has been held in the new RZUA building, and Krista Smith wants to extend a special thank you to James Jones for letting them use the building.
